Sampling Mouse and Rat Serum from the Submandibular Vein

(Protocol summary only for purposes of this preview site)

When multiple blood samples are needed from a mouse, collecting blood from the submandibular vein is a humane and efficient method for collecting routine blood samples from nonanesthetized mice. The submandibular method in mice uses a large vein that drains from the head. A lancet (5-mm point size) is used to puncture this vein, yielding a reasonable volume of blood. A sterile gauze pad can be applied to stop the bleeding. Blood collection should not exceed 79 of the animal's total blood volume or 1 of total body weight every 24 wk. This protocol was based on information from the Animal Resources, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Core Facilities website.
